Several folks have reached out recently to learn more about my consulting and executive coaching journey. These conversations, while all different, tend to surface some common misconceptions about consulting and executive coaching.
To set the record straight, I took to the #CommsLede blog. Here are the highlights:
#1: Opening my own consulting practice is a way to “dial back.”
Reality: Opening an independent practice actually requires some serious ramping up.
#2: Consulting will be equally (or more) profitable than my current corporate role.
Reality: It depends on your hustle and grit … and your ability to manage a small business.
#3: If I’m a subject matter expert/talented professional, consulting will be an easy transition.
Reality: Not so fast, friend. Coaching requires a different skillset.
#4: Consultants have the luxury of leaving complex matrix environments behind.
Reality: Consultants are actually navigating the matrix without any “insider” benefits.
#5: Consultants have the luxury of focusing on a single project or effort.
Reality: Way more is probably happening behind the scenes.
#6: Consultants have the flexibility to choose who they work with and when.
Reality: It depends.
#7: Coaching, Mentoring, Advising … It’s all the same.
Reality: While some skills overlap, coaching is an entirely different ballgame.
#8: I’m a seasoned leader/pro/mentor … coaching will be a breeze.
Reality: Like Coach Ted Lasso said, “Taking on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.”
#9: Consulting or corporate in-house roles are my only options.
Reality: What if you stayed open to all the possibilities that come your way?
I’m hoping these posts shed light on some common misconceptions folks have about consultants and coaches, the work we do, and the business environment in which we practice. They might also offer a new perspective for professionals who are considering an independent practice career path.
